With its mission to mobilize the citizenry in protecting, conserving, and managing the environment and natural resources, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) held recently the first Recognition Awards for Eco-friendly Government Offices on the national level.
Nine national government agencies were cited for their eco-friendly operations. Environmental Excellence Awards were presented to the National Electrification Administration, the Philippine Heart Center, and the Development Bank of the Philippines.
Citations of Merit went to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, the Philippine Economic Zone Authority, the Department of Public Works and Highways, the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the National Housing Authority, and the National Economic and Development Authority.
The awards were based on the following criteria: 80% for implementing environment-friendly office operations, particularly in waste management, electricity, water and fuel conservation, air pollution prevention, emergency preparedness, green procurement and greening; 10% for institutionalizing environmental management policies; and 10% for overall orderliness, cleanliness, and safety in the office premises.
The awards emphasized the commitment needed to adopt and sustain eco-friendly practices in every Filipino employee’s “second home” – that is the workplace where materials and equipment used and energy consumed all have an impact on the environment.
The DENR’s Recognition Awards for Eco-friendly Government Offices was launched during the Earth Day 2010 observed every April 22 of each year. Its objective is to assess the implementation of environmental management programs in government agencies and government-owned and controlled offices in Metro Manila and on the national level.
