Robbers posing as QC Police, target Homosexuals

The Quezon City Police District on Tuesday warned gays about robbers posing as policemen and making arrests for alleged prostitution.

Chief Supt. George Regis, QCPD director, warned gays against falling for the intimidation or coercion tactics of the robbers.

He advised the public not to agree to go anywhere with supposed policemen except to the police station.

“During arrests, policemen are obliged to read the Miranda Warning to all suspects. One way to check if the supposed cop is legitimate or not is to ask him to read the Miranda Warning to you,” he added.

The law mandates law enforcers to inform suspects of their rights.

A suspect should be informed about his right to remain silent and his right to have a lawyer with him during interrogation.

The warning came after the recent arrest of Ryan Torres, 25, of 40 Marulas St., Barangay 140, Caloocan City on the complaint filed by Jenmar Tungay, a 19-year old homosexual from General Santos City.

PO3 Albert Lanuso of the QCPD-Station 7 arrested Torres at the Sogo Hotel on Edsa corner Aurora Boulevard.

Torres, in a police uniform, accosted Tungay and threatened to arrest him for prostitution if he would not check in with him at the hotel.

Lanuso said the suspect took the victim to Room 407, took away his P15,000-Blackberry phone and P1,740 in cash, and then ordered him to leave the room.

Tungay sought the assistance of the police, who immediately proceeded to the hotel and nabbed the suspect.
