Police your ranks, President Aquino asks media

President Benigno C. Aquino III called on media to be vigilant against “rotten tomatoes” within its ranks who peddle baseless rumors and lies.

In his speech at the 37th top-level management conference of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas, Mr. Aquino said that just like any institution that has influence and power, Philippine media is not perfect.

“There are also rotten tomatoes who unfortunately are within your ranks. It is the duty of the KBP and the media in general to police its own ranks against those who bring shame to your profession—-those who twist the news to favor a few people and those who peddle baseless rumors and lies to divert the attention of the people from the truth,” he said.

The President said his administration aims to have a “genuine partnership” with media. “As we tread the straight path, no one will put a noose on you to make you government puppets,” he said.

Mr. Aquino has had several run-ins with media, mostly over his love life and his penchant for video games.

“What is disappointing is that some media practitioners have apparently forgotten their primary duty: to tell the truth....Nothing bars you from exercising the right to free press, but please remember any form of freedom has accompanying responsibilities,” he said.
