Billboards do not cause traffic accidents, said one of the longest running outdoor advertising firms in Mindanao and the Visayas.
Lloyd Tronco, of Tronco Advertising Co. Inc., said mishaps were due to wreckless driving.
He cited a study made by the Philippine Center for Out-Of-Home Media Research and Science, indicating that 3 percent of the 600 motorists interviewed, were focused on driving rather than distracted by the commercial roadside displays.
But 97% of respondents consisting of commuters or drivers said they took a look at the ads.
“The result only proves that billboards does not cause accidents as claimed by government agencies that eyes of drivers were distracted because the gigantic billboards,” Tronco said.
“So, there is no proof that drivers get into accident because of billboards.”
Citing environment and public safety, the Metro Manila Development Authority has ordered a crackdown on the billboards along Edsa and other major roads.
