Pound-for-pound king and Sarangani Representative Manny Pacquiao on Tuesday joined the call for a legislated P125 wage hike, a proposed law sought to be certified as urgent by several legislators.
“Bago ko narating ang kinalalagyan ko, ako ay naging ordinaryong manggagawa, naging janitor…Tinanggap ko ang mga trabahong yun kahit kakarampot ang sweldo para makakain ang aking pamilya. Nagconstruction worker ako, nagtinda ng sampaguita at kung anu-ano pang trabaho,” Pacquiao said as he expressed support for the passage of the bill.
Pacquiao co-authored House Bill No. 375 otherwise known as “An Act Providing for a P125 daily across the board increase in the salary rates of employees and workers in the private sector and for other purposes.”
The minimum wage in Metro Manila being P404 is P553 short of the family living wage valued at P957 as of June 2010 according to the National Wages and Productivity Commission.
HB 375 pushing for a legislated wage hike was a take-off from a measure passed but later recalled by the 13th Congress at the last hour on the excuse that there was a need to review the Committee Report, which recommended for its approval.
